E3 - 2013: Latest Gran Turismo 6 Information
At 6:00 pm local time on June 10, 2013, the PlayStation® E3 Press Conference was held, and the latest news regarding Gran Turismo 6 was released. Here is an overview of what was announced:
Inclusion of popular cars beginning with FIA GT3 machines
Many of the world’s most popular cars will be included in Gran Turismo 6, including FIA GT3 category racecars that have taken the leading role in GT car racing today. The cars shown at E3 2013 include the following:
Nissan DeltaWing '12
Having an extremely narrow front end and a wide rear end, this vehicle’s revolutionary rocket-like styling has sent shockwaves in the racecar design world. After appearing for the first time in the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans, the car also participated later that year in the Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta in the U.S., where GT Academy Winner Lucas Ordóñez and his fellow drivers achieved 5th place overall. Their achievement proved beyond a doubt that the DeltaWing was a formidable race machine with incredible potential.Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (C7) '14
Gran Turismo has followed the development process of the latest iteration of “America’s sports car,” from the introduction of the camouflaged Test Prototype to the pre-production Final Prototype. And at E3 2013, the production model will finally make its appearance. Enjoy the feel, sound and breathtaking performance of the all-new Corvette that will soon be in the hands of eager enthusiasts around the world.BMW Z4 GT3 '11
BMW introduced this car in the FIA GT3 category after the great success of its legendary racing M3. Based on the production Z4, the car has been made lighter, wider and the center of gravity has been lowered. Also, the car’s, aerodynamics have been significantly improved to produce more downforce. The engine is a 4.0-liter V-8 that shares the same DNA of the powerplant of the famous M3. Its long nose, short overhangs and aggressive fascia give this car the look of a true winner.Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 '11
The SLS AMG GT3 achieved its first victory in the Nürburgring 24 hour race in 2013. While keeping the dedicated SLS AMG aluminum space frame and 6.3 liter V-8 engine, the German supercar has been transformed into a mean FIA GT3 racecar. Its unique pulsating exhaust sound adds another dash of flavor to a truly unique car that inherits the distinctive gullwing doors of the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SL of yesteryear.Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 N24 Schulze Motorsport '13
This is the actual racing machine that the producer of the Gran Turismo series, Kazunori Yamauchi, drove in the 2013 Nürburgring 24 hour race. Although it’s based on the production car, the track width has been greatly expanded, and its drivetrain changed from four-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive. It also shed a good deal of weight. It was the first Japanese car in Nürburgring history to lead qualifying at one point, showing its extremely high potential as a racing car.Audi R8 LMS ultra (Audi Sport Team Phoenix) #3 '12
This is a GT3 machine born from the exotic R8, Audi’s flagship sports car. The company’s famous Quattro all-wheel drive system has been shelved for this model to adopt a mid-engine/rear-wheel-drive layout. The performance of the ultra version has been greatly improved, thanks to a number of changes including carbon-fiber door panels, as well as an exhaust upgrade and aerodynamic improvements. Car #3 belongs to Team Phoenix, the champion machine in the 2012 Nürburgring 24 hour race.New Locations with Grander Scale
In E3 2013, new locations included in Gran Turismo 6 were also introduced. Here are the three new venues introduced at the show:
Gemasolar (Photo Stage)
Gemasolar is a massive concentrated solar power plant located in Seville, Spain. A total of 2650 reflector mirrors that are each 9 meters tall and 12 meters wide are arranged in a circular layout, and the facility generates enough electricity to power 25,000 homes. This expansive facility covers an amazing 185 hectares (approximately 457 acres) of land. This is a truly unique location where the utilization of limitless natural energy is visualized on a colossal scale.Willow Springs International Raceway
This famous circuit in California is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and is finally making an appearance in Gran Turismo. Willow Springs International Raceway is a circuit that is located in a hilly region just outside of Los Angeles. Of its many layouts, the course we are introducing at this time is the main course called “Big Willow”. At 2.5 miles per lap, it is known for its challenging high-speed corners and intense elevation changes that trace the hilly terrain.Matterhorn
This is an original track that has been created in the vicinity of the Gornergrat station, which is well-known for its incredible view of the famous Matterhorn in Switzerland. This is a mountain course with extreme elevation changes, located over 3000 meters above sea level. A sheer rock face follows along the track, but the width of the course is wide enough for overtaking cars in a race. The sight of the European Alps as you cross over the hill here is simply spectacular. We hope everyone will enjoy the sheer scale of the stunning natural scenery around the track when driving this course.Introducing a movie showing the highlights of Gran Turismo 6
At E3 2013, the “GT6 Concept Movie #2 2013 E3” was released, showing the highlights and new evolutions made in Gran Turismo 6. In addition to the new cars and tracks introduced above, the movie also shows the progress that was made possible in simulation, thanks to collaborations with technical partners such as the Yokohama Rubber and KW Automotive, as well as the evolution of the graphic engine.
New car physics simulation
The physics model which dictates the dynamics of the car has been renewed completely. Load changes of the car, changes in vehicle attitude and the relationship between the surface and the tires are even more realistic now. Players familiar with the game will immediately feel the new depth in driving feel the first time they turn the steering wheel.Tire Modeling
With the help of our technical partner, the Yokohama Rubber, a new tire model has been introduced that reflects the tire compound, tire structure and changes in characteristics under extreme load conditions.Suspension Modeling
In collaboration with German suspension manufacturer KW Automotive, the precision and functionality of the shock absorber modeling has been improved significantly to deliver the most life-like suspension actuation yet.Aerodynamics
Key aerodynamic factors—downforce, lift, and air resistance—which continually change the vehicle’s attitude and its relationship with the ground surface, have been recreated to a level of precision never seen before. Keen players will probably start to feel the airflow around the car as they drive.Adaptive Tessellation
Adaptive Tessellation represents the next-generation in 3D model rendering technology. Tessellation involves dividing a polygon into multiple geometric tiles, and in Adaptive Tessellation, the polygons will automatically divide and become finer according to the viewing distance and position. This makes it possible to maintain the very high quality of the surface image whether you are close up or far away from your viewing object.HDR Rendering Engine
In order to more accurately express the wide dynamic range of real-life scenery, the HDR dynamic range in Gran Turismo 6 has been made 50 times greater than that in GT5. This prevents over-flaring of highlights and blackouts in shadows caused by extreme differences in brightness; allows more natural blurring effects; and the glimmering effect of lighting is better represented for an improved user experience. This will also enable better motion blurring which increases dynamic motion effects.-
