Featured Cars Introduction

Toyota GR86 RZ '21

This version of Japan's signature lightweight sports car boasts a bigger engine, but it remains true to its heritage.

Since its introduction in 2012, more than 200,000 units of the Toyota 86 were sold around the world, solidifying its place in the history books as one of the most popular front-engine/rear-wheel-drive compact sports cars of all time.

Nine years after the 86's debut, Toyota introduced the GR86, a high-performance version of the car that wore the Gazoo Racing badge (GR). While maintaining the virtues of the original car, namely a lightweight body and superb handling, Toyota engineers equipped the GR86 with a larger engine. Under the hood was a 2.4-liter flat-4 that replaced the 2.0-liter variant. Power came in at an impressive 231.8 hp/7,000 rpm with maximum torque peaking at 184.4 ft-lb/3,700 rpm. This translated to a 0-62.1-mph acceleration time of 6.3 seconds, which was a stark improvement over the 7.4 seconds of the first-generation model.

To enhance the 86's handling, the company's chassis engineers stiffened the body and adopted aluminum in the roof panel to lower the center of gravity, as well as reduce overall weight. With the GR86, Toyota offered sports-car enthusiasts exactly what they were hoping for with the 86: a meaner, faster version of the car that was designed for the race track.

Subaru BRZ S '21

The second-gen FR sports car features a larger 2.4-liter engine.

A collaborative effort between Subaru and Toyota resulted in the front engine/rear-wheel-drive Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86. In 2020, the second-generation versions (ZD8) of these identical twins were released.

A new platform was adopted, featuring a number of improvements from the previous models. The entire chassis utilized Subaru's inner frame construction, which provided more rigidity and reduced weight. The combination of Subaru's flat-4, also called a boxer engine, with Toyota's direct-injection technology was carried over from the previous car. One big change to the new car was that the engine's cylinder bore was enlarged, increasing displacement from 2.0 liters to 2.4 liters. As a result, output was raised to 173 kW (231.8 hp)/250 Nm (184.4 ft-lb), making the car faster and more pleasant to drive. The transmission was either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, with the automatic-equipped model coming with the EyeSight driver assistance system as standard equipment.

The car featured here is the "S," the high-end model with improved interior and exterior, including 18-inch wheels, ultra suede and leather combination seats and an 8-speaker car stereo.
