Lucas Ordóñez Wins His First Super GT in Thailand
On October 5 at the 7th round of the Super GT series held at Chang International Circuit in Thailand, the first GT Academy winner Lucas Ordóñez achieved his first GT300 Class victory.
The Chang International Circuit is a brand new course that recently opened in eastern Thailand last month. The only event outside of Japan for the 2014 Super GT series became the christening event for this circuit.
In the GT300 class the "i-mobile AAS" Porsche 911 GT3 #99, a spot participant from a local team gained the pole position spot, and lead the race early with a strong start. Lucas Ordóñez and Kazuki Hoshino in the "B-Max NDDP" GT-R #3, and the Studie BMW Z4 #7 (driven by Seiji Ara/ Jörg Müller) began their chase. Strategic pits by the two teams set them ahead of the #99 car at one point, but the differences in top speed would eventually lead to the #99 car regaining the lead and widening the gap.
However, car #99 encountered a flat tire on the 49th lap, slowing them down considerably. The GT-R #3 car gained the lead, with the BMW #7 car following. The two cars fought a heated and close battle with less than a second gap between the two in the latter part of the race. But in the end Lucas was able to fend off the fierce attempts by Müller to overtake, and secured the race victory.
This was Lucas's 7th race in the Japan Super GT series, which he entered through the NISMO Global Driver Exchange Program. Until now Lucas had shown great speed in the series but had not acquired a win. Congratulations to Lucas and his team for their first victory in a very competitive and heated battle in Thailand.
