Featured Car Introduction
Toyota GR Corolla MORIZO Edition '22
Gazoo Racing (GR), Toyota’s high-performance division, took everything it has learned in its motorsports endeavors to produce the ultimate hot hatch, the GR Corolla.
In creating the GR Corolla, the goal of the GR team was to offer performance on par with the super cars of the day. To enhance the car's lateral stability, the front track of the Corolla Sport's chassis was widened by 60 mm, while the rear grew by 85 mm. Also, to increase the rigidity of the overall structure, an additional 349 extra structural spot welds were performed.
Under the hood is the turbocharged 1.6-liter 3-cylinder dynamic force engine that was highly praised in the GR Yaris. But for the GR Corolla, efficiency was improved by decreasing exhaust flow resistance, resulting in an output of 300 HP. An active torque split 4-wheel-drive system with a Torsen LSD efficiently effectively sends that power to all four tires, making the GR Corolla one of the most stable and agile performance compacts in the marketplace.
The most potent version of the GR Corolla—undoubtedly the sportiest Corolla ever—is the MORIZO Edition. "Morizo" is the nickname of Toyota Motor Corporation chairman and master driver Akio Toyoda. This limited-edition model was born from Mr. Toyoda’s wish to "bring back Corollas that turn heads."
What sets the MORIZO Edition apart from the base GR Corolla is its superior performance. For one, it had its rear seats removed to save weight, effectively becoming a 2-seat model. The car also comes equipped with a unique close-ratio transmission and final gear setup, while maximum boost of the turbocharger was increased to deliver even more torque. Along with unique forged wheels and monotube suspension dampers, this special model achieves a whole new level of performance.
In an automotive world that's gradually shifting to electrification and automation, the GR Corolla is a one-of-a-kind sports car that reminds us of the undeniable allure of the internal combustion engine.
