Car Categories

Getting More Out of the Game

Gran Turismo 7 features a wide range of cars. These cars are divided into categories and car types, the first making it easier to determine which cars should race against each other, and the second being reflective of the car's internationally-recognised definition. A list of car categories and car types is provided below.

Categories

Group 3: Racing cars whose bodies have been fundamentally remodelled for greater aerodynamic performance. This group corresponds to the FIA's GT3 class.

Group 4: Racing cars that have undergone basic remodelling, such as having additional safety features added or weight optimisation. This group corresponds to the FIA's GT4 class.

Group 1: Racing cars with bodies and engines specially developed to provide higher performance. This group also includes prototype sports cars etc.

Group 2: Racing cars that represent the highest peak of the touring car category. This group corresponds to the GT500 class that runs in the Japanese SUPER GT.

Group B: Rally cars that have been modified for dirt racing, with improved suspension, body height control, and so on.

Car Types

Road Car: A mass-produced car for ordinary road usage.

Racing Car: A car that has been designed and built to compete in races.

Professionally-Tuned Car: A car that has already been tuned at the point of purchase.

Hypercar: A car built with the intention of having it perform on racing circuits.

Vision Gran Turismo: A car designed by a global car manufacturer or brand in collaboration with Gran Turismo.

Concept Car: A car that is exhibited at motor shows.

Safety Car: A car that drives ahead of competition cars in a race in order to ensure the safety of the track.

Kei Car: A:A car that has been built in accordance with Japanese 'kei car' specifications.

Electric Car: A car with an electrically-driven motor.

Hybrid: A car that is propelled by at least one combustion engine and one electric motor.

Gran Turismo Award: A car that has received the Gran Turismo Award at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) custom car show in Las Vegas (USA).

GT500: A car that has competed in the GT500 class of Japan's Super GT car racing series.

Le Mans: A car that has competed in France's 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the top three endurance races in the world.

Nürburgring 24 Hours: A car that has competed at Germany's Nürburgring, in one of the top three endurance races in the world.

WRC: A car that has competed in the World Rally Championship.

Kart: An introductory category of car in motor racing .

Pikes Peak: A car that has competed in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a time-attack event held in Colorado (USA).

Midship: A car with an engine that is mounted between the front and the rear axles of a car body.

Pickup Truck: A vehicle with an area at the back in which goods can be carried.
